Individual Board Member Responsibilities

Note: Articles published before January 1, 2017 may be out of date. We are in the process of updating this content.

Board members must realize they have personal expectations and responsibilities for their board service. The board makes decisions only as a collective team but its members have individual duties and tasks for which they are accountable. Board members are liable for their own actions.

What to do:

  • Familiarize yourself about the mission, programs, and history of the organization
  • Accept and complete assignments as agreed
  • Come to meetings regularly — and come prepared
  • Avoid conflict of interest — even in appearance
  • Remain loyal to the organization
  • Keep confidential information confidential
  • Make a personal financial contribution
